The
Core is the trunk (Pilates called it “the box”).
He taught that all action must first initiate from the core
The muscles within “the box,” shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip,
must be drawn in toward the center of gravity (approximately the area between
the navel and the low back). Upon exhalation, the shoulder blades are gently
pulled down and back, the front ribs are pulled in and down, the pelvic floor
(the muscles used to stop the flow of urine) are drawn up, the buttocks muscles
are gripped, and the navel is pulled back into the spine. All at once! |
|
| This
very important "centering of the core" must occur the
split second before any form of exertion with the arms or legs.
When the core muscles are engaged in this way the arms and legs
are free to move with more efficiency and
fluidity. |
